Reflections Won the Grand Prize in the Global VR Challenge!
Last week in Shanghai China, Reflections won the Grand Prize in the Global VR challenge. The event narrowed down over 200 entrants from around the world, including the United States, Europe and Asia. The final 16 teams include 6 Chinese teams and 10 international teams, including Q.U.B.E. 2, The Body VR, Town of Light, Space Box: The Journey Outside the Box, and many others. You can find the full list of winners here.
The event was sponsored by Steel Media and Pocket Gamer as well as DeePoon, a Chinese company specializing in VR technology. Reflections was unexpectedly selected as the "Champion" for the event! This came with it a prestigious slot at DeePoon's booth ChinaJoy 2016. The honor also came with it a $17,000 first place cash prize. Each of the 16 finalist teams also received a finalist Trophy and were graciously hosted for a week long trip to Shanghai China, for business meetings and general exposure to Chinese gaming market.
Narrative adventure games aren't typically see as successful in the Chinese market, but in light of our success at the Global VR Challenge and the ChinaJoy showcase, we believe that Reflections offers a unique approach that transcends cultural boundaries. The game is narrative driven, but focuses largely on nonverbal communication in a way that makes it more accessible and compelling for non-western gamers. The judges and players we spoke to responded to the games sense of scale and freedom, as well as the stylish use of visuals as part of the game mechanic in the way the world gets flushed with color. Because the game accommodates exploration as a form of narrative, players are allowed to set their own pace and explore as little or as much of the world as they like, without explicit goals requiring certain types of interaction. We think this has a lot to do with why so many different types of people respond well to the game.
We were extremely honored to be included in the event, and this win makes us especially proud of the work we've done over the last year and a half. Reflections has placed in a variety of events and festivals, but this is our first victory, as well as our first experience with the Asian games market. We hope that this event is the sign of good things to come Reflections as the game gets closer to launch.
We met a lot of great friends in Shanghai and greatly appreciate that both DeePoon and Steel Media gave us this unique opportunity. We plan to increase our focus on VR in the coming months and provide more compatibility with VR devices, including the potential of collaboration with DeePoon on bringing Reflections to the Chinese market. We plan to us the prize money to increase the quality of the game's content and prepare for our full launch in early 2017.
